Chief Information Officer (CIO)
The Chief Information Officer has responsibility for the policy direction, strategic planning, and overall coordination of information resources and management. Of particular concern for the CIO are policies that support the university's commitment to expand and enrich its involvement in the growing information infrastructure. This includes the standards the university adopts, the initiatives it pursues, and the investments it makes in networking, computing, integration of voice-data-video, and much more in support of the University’s mission.
Dr. Marc Hoit is UF’s second administrator over Information Technology. He has held numerous administrative positions including Director of Student PeopleSoft Implementation, the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs Administration and the Associate Dean for Research in the College of Engineering at the University of Florida. He is a Professor in Civil & Coastal Engineering Department. He was the Interim Chair of the Civil & Coastal department from 1999-2000. He received his BS from Purdue University in 1978, his MS in 1980 and PhD in 1984 from University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Hoit is very active in the research and educational community. His discipline specialty is in the development of Finite Element Analysis software and computational mechanics algorithms. His current structural engineering research involves the computer program, FB-Pier, which analyzes bridge pier, superstructure and pile foundations subjected to any loading. This work has lead to the creation of the Bridge Software Institute at University of Florida for which he is the director. He is active in engineering education research and was very active in the SUCCEED coalition, one of the National Science Foundation funded engineering educational reform coalitions. Dr. Hoit was the faculty advisor for the student chapter of the American Society of Civil Engineers for 12 years. During his tenure as advisor, they have won their regional competitions for five of seven years. He has also help the student steel bridge team place in the top five nationally since 1993.
Some of Dr. Hoit's awards include: Distinguished Faculty Award, University of Florida, 2000; Outstanding Student Organization Advisor of the Year, University of Florida, 2000; Certificate of Commendation, National ASCE, 1999, the Ben Dasher Award, Honorable Mention, Best Paper, National Frontiers in Education, 1996 and the Edmund Friedman Young Engineer from ASCE in 1988.
