The complex organizational and technical issues of information technology resources at the University of Florida required the Task Force to spend a large amount of time talking to people and searching for a way to structure the issues. The activities of the Task Force over the last year were as follows:
November 15, 1990 - Task Force Appointment
November 15 - December 15, 1990 - Resource Providers Self Study
Resource providers were requested to submit to the Task Force information about their missions, activities, and resources. These reports are provided in Appendix I.
December 4, 1990 - Initial meeting of Task Force, Formation of Sub-groups
The Task Force membership was divided into three subgroups to focus on the issues related to Academic Computing, Non-Academic (Administrative) Computing, and Networking.
December 13-18, 1990 - Sub-group discussion of providers' self studies
December 20, 1990- January 7, 1991 Christmas Break
January 8-10, 1991 - Subgroup Meetings, Formulation of Issues
Issues were grouped under the headings of Coordination, Planning, Support, Security, Access, Environmental Health and Safety, and Technology for Instruction.
January 11-15, 1991 - First round of open forum discussions
January 16-27, 1991 - Subgroup meetings, discussion of open forums
January 28-29, 1991 - Second round of open forum discussions
February 8-12, 1991 - Subgroup Meetings, revision and expansion of issues list, -- definition of goals
February 22-26, 1991 - Subgroup Meetings, formulation of initial recommendation list
March 11, 1991 - Initial draft of goals and recommendations
In the initial draft, eighteen (18) goals were proposed, along with seven (7) recommendations on organization of personnel, resources, and services, and
fourteen (14) recommendations on management of resources.
March 11-17, 1991 - Comments solicited on initial draft from campus experts
March 18, 1991 - Task Force meeting, review of initial draft comments
March 22, 1991 - Task Force meeting with Provost Sorensen to review initial draft
March 29, 1991 - Task Force meeting, planning for second stage of study
The decision was made to discuss issues and proposed recommendations with users and providers in targeted small group settings.
April 2-20, 1991 - Mid semester busy period, no meetings
April 22, 1991 - Task Force meeting, new sub-group assignments
The Task Force membership was divided into six sub-groups with each sub-group given responsibility for obtaining comment from particular segments of information technology resources use (affinity groups). The six sub-groups were (1) Faculty and Graduate Student Computing, (2) User Education (Training) and Support, (3) Administrative and Academic Information Systems, (4) Instruction and Research Information Systems, (5) Technology in Instruction, (6) Networking.
